Are you looking to explore the world of fables, fairy tales, and folktales in your classroom? Do you want to do this in a fun and innovative way which gets your students building their listening and reading comprehension skills along the way? Then, this is the perfect lesson for you!

Our partner Listenwise, which helps students build listening and reading comprehension skills, has designed a companion lesson to Episode 9: Look Before You Eat featuring storyteller and author Bil Lepp The lesson uses our episode to help students explore the genre of folktales, which for centuries has not only entertained us, but also taught morals. Below, you can download a free PDF version of the lesson where you’ll find discussion themes, texts to pair with the episode, listening organizers, and a themed vocabulary list.

While the story in Episode 9 is timeless, it was dreamed up by a modern 12 year old boy who incorporated his own likes and culture into it too. This lesson is a neat opportunity for kids to think of ways to connect what they are learning in the classroom to their lives and the world beyond. Perhaps they too can dream up a fable of their own!
