Intensive Camp: On Air- Everything You Need to Know About Podcasting

To cap off Story Seeds summer of podcasts programs, our one-week immersive camp led by educator Claudia Haines invites kids to explores the nuts and bolts of what it takes to make a podcast—from ideation and creating memorable audio logos to scripting, recording, and editing. All week long, participants will meet experts (storytellers, producers, sound engineers, and kids and family podcasters) and learn their tricks of the trade. They will also create and record short audio gems as they lay the foundation for making their own podcasts. This class will be a combination of two synchronous (live) virtual instruction sessions per day with time in between for independent project work. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiments in podcasting and collaborate with their learning community in a shared Padlet.

Claudia Haines is a long-time youth services librarian, educator, and media mentor who is passionate about designing creative learning experiences for kids, teens, and families that support literacy in a connected world. She leads inclusive hands-on workshops in a variety of in-person and remote settings that incorporate storytelling, social and emotional learning, digital tools, and media literacy skills. She also trains educators nationwide on media mentorship, computational thinking for young children, and family learning in the library.

During the pandemic shutdown, Claudia hosted a weekly Radio Storytime on KBBI, a radio station in Homer, Alaska and designed Activity to Go Kits for older kids and teens which included design prompts to spark making and an online platform for makers to share what they made with each other. She is also the co-author of the book Becoming a Media Mentor: Working with Children and Families.
